CBI arrests five more suspects in ‘digital arrest’ fraud crackdown

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested five additional suspects as part of ‘Operation Chakra-6’, a crackdown on organized ‘digital arrest’ cybercrime networks in India. This brings the total number of arrests in the ongoing investigation to eight.

The operation follows directives from the Supreme Court of India, which expressed concern over the rise of digital arrest scams. Previously, the CBI conducted coordinated raids at 89 locations across 20 states.

The investigation focuses on three major fraud cases involving massive financial losses: a case in BITS Pilani where a victim was defrauded of 7.67 crore rupees, a case in Gujarat involving 19.24 crore rupees, and a case in Karnataka involving 15.45 crore rupees. The arrested individuals are accused of using various bank accounts to receive and transfer stolen funds to facilitate money laundering and evade tracking.
