Girbala Singh arrested in Twisha Sharma dowry‑death case

Twisha Sharma, a 33‑year‑old former model, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on 12 May 2026. Her family allege she was subjected to dowry‑related harassment and forced abortion by her husband Samarth Singh and mother‑in‑law Giribala Singh. The case drew nationwide attention, leading the Supreme Court to order the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail previously granted to Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, noting that lower‑court proceedings had not properly considered the evidence, including WhatsApp chats and multiple injuries recorded in the post‑mortem report. Following the bail cancellation, a CBI team arrested Giribala Singh on 28 May 2026 at her residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area after several hours of questioning. She faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (sections 80‑2, 85, 3‑5) and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 (sections 3 and 4). Samarth Singh remains in CBI custody.

The court’s order quoted Justice Devnarayan Mishra: “in the light of the factual aspects of the case and the allegations levelled against the respondent, the anticipatory bail … deserved to be quashed.” Twisha’s father thanked the judiciary, saying the decision “is a positive message for society.” The investigation continues under CBI supervision.
