CBI arrests South East Central Railway official in bribery case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior official from the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers, stationed as the Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer with the South East Central Railway in Bhilai. The arrest follows allegations that the officer demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to process pending bills.

During a sting operation on August 13, the CBI caught the official accepting Rs 50,000, which was the first installment of the bribe, delivered via a middleman who was also apprehended. Subsequent searches of the officer’s residences and office in Raipur and Bhilai led to the recovery of approximately Rs 77 lakh in cash and jewellery valued at roughly Rs 14 lakh.

The accused and the middleman were produced before a court on August 14 and have been remanded to police custody for four days as investigations continue.
