Twisha Sharma dowry death case: CBI takes mother‑in‑law and husband into custody
The ashes of Twisha Sharma, the 33‑year‑old actor‑model whose alleged dowry‑death in Bhopal sparked nationwide outrage, were immersed at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh. Her father, Navnidhi Sharma, said the family will continue “the massive struggle” for justice.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail previously granted to Giribala Singh, a retired district judge and Twisha’s mother‑in‑law. On the same day a Bhopal district court ordered five‑day custody of Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband, under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Both were arrested after lengthy questioning, taken to a special medical camp for examinations, and then produced before Sessions Judge Shobhana Bhalavi.
The CBI has conducted a detailed forensic inspection of the Katara Hills residence, recording video, photography and collecting evidence. Investigators are examining WhatsApp chats, CCTV footage, medical reports showing multiple ante‑mortem injuries, and allegations that Giribala used her cyber‑forensics expertise to tamper with evidence. A dowry demand of Rs 2 lakh at the vidai ceremony and pressure on Twisha to terminate a pregnancy have also been cited.
The case has drawn intense public and media attention, prompting a suo motu note by the Supreme Court and calls for a precedent‑setting judgment that will address dowry harassment and women’s safety in marriage.
