CBI files FIR in Twisha Sharma dowry death; court orders second autopsy

Twisha Sharma, a former Miss Pune, was found hanging at her in‑law's residence in Bhopal on 12 May 2026. Initial investigations treated the case as a suicide, but her family alleged dowry‑related harassment by husband Samarth Singh and mother‑in‑law Giribala Singh. The Madhya Pradesh government transferred the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which filed a dowry‑death FIR naming both as accused and took Samarth Singh into custody. The FIR also records that Giribala Singh demanded Rs 2 lakh from Twisha’s family during the vidai ceremony. The state high court ordered a second autopsy by a team of AIIMS‑Delhi doctors after the family raised concerns about the first post‑mortem. The Supreme Court of India issued a suo motu notice, urging restraint in media coverage and highlighting possible procedural irregularities. The state government has argued that injury marks on Twisha’s wrist, elbow and head could indicate a struggle before death, prompting a call to reconsider the suicide narrative.
