CBI launches investigation into Armstrong murder in Tamil Nadu

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun a fresh probe into the July 5, 2024 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party state president K. Armstrong in Chennai after the Tamil Nadu government withdrew its appeal against a Supreme Court‑ordered CBI inquiry. The agency received the case files, plans to re‑register the FIR filed by the Tamil Nadu police and may add additional charges before summoning suspects for questioning. The murder, carried out by a gang near Armstrong’s under‑construction residence in Perambur, had previously resulted in a 7,800‑page charge sheet against 30 individuals. The Madras High Court had ordered a CBI probe in September 2025, citing procedural failures in the state investigation, but the then‑DMK‑led government challenged the order. The new TVK‑led administration’s withdrawal of the appeal cleared the way for the CBI to take over the case.
