Anil Ambani and Reliance Capital Charged in ₹1,816 Crore EPFO Fraud Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a First Information Report on 31 July 2026 against Reliance Capital Limited and its former chairman Anil D. Ambani, along with unknown public servants and other persons. The FIR was filed on the basis of a written complaint from the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The complaint alleges that Reliance Capital issued secured non‑convertible debentures (NCDs) in 2013‑14, into which the EPFO invested ₹2,500 crore through four portfolio managers, including Reliance Capital Asset Management Ltd. The NCDs were scheduled to mature in 2023 and 2024. Fraudulent transactions and diversion of funds are said to have caused a default on redemption, resulting in a principal loss of ₹1,007.55 crore and an interest liability of ₹808.67 crore, totalling a loss of ₹1,816.22 crore to the EPFO.

The accused are charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust and criminal misconduct. The CBI’s investigation aims to identify the role of all involved parties, trace the end use of the invested funds and examine the alleged conspiracy. The agency noted that it has previously registered seven FIRs against other Reliance ADA Group companies, filed four charge‑sheets and arrested seven persons, with the investigations being monitored by the Supreme Court.
