CBL-514 injection shows promise in destroying visceral fat cells

Clinical trials for a new injectable drug, CBL-514, have shown promising results in treating obesity by targeting fat cells through apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Unlike traditional weight loss methods that primarily shrink fat cells, this approach aims to destroy them, potentially preventing the weight regain often seen after GLP-1 treatments.

Two Phase 2 trials, CBL-0204 and CBL-0205, included 107 and 173 participants, respectively. Analysis of a 41-person subgroup revealed that those receiving injections for 12 weeks experienced an average 12.01 percent reduction in visceral fat. In contrast, the placebo group saw an average increase of 5.68 percent in visceral fat over the same period.

Endocrinologist Timothy Garvey of the University of Alabama at Birmingham noted that while the cosmetic benefits of subcutaneous fat loss are significant, the primary health advantages lie in the reduction of visceral fat and subsequent improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol levels. These findings were presented at international conferences but have not yet undergone peer review.
