CBP Commissioner defends $46 billion border wall project in Texas
Rodney Scott, Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), has defended the Trump administration's plans to construct a border wall and additional infrastructure in the Big Bend region of Texas. Despite a court order temporarily suspending construction and opposition from a bipartisan coalition of landowners, local businesses, and environmentalists, Scott stated that the goal of fortifying the border is “not negotiable.”
The $46 billion project aims to reinforce approximately 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) of the U.S.-Mexico border using 9-meter (30-foot) steel walls, vehicle barriers, new roads, and surveillance technology. Scott warned that leaving regions like Big Bend without fortifications could result in the area becoming “completely overwhelmed and destroyed.”
According to Scott, the agency is currently constructing approximately 19 kilometers of border infrastructure per week. He estimates that the primary wall will be completed by late December 2027, ahead of the conclusion of the current presidential term.
