Arizona border wall construction begins amid Tohono O'odham Nation protests
The Trump administration has commenced construction of a new border wall segment in southern Arizona, a move that has ignited intense conflict with the Tohono O'odham Nation. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) maintains the project is necessary to secure a dangerous smuggling and trafficking corridor used by cartels.
The Tohono O'odham Nation has accused federal agents and contractors of trespassing on tribal land to conduct pre-construction activities, including soil sampling and drilling. The tribe argues that the construction will cause significant devastation to the reservation, including the destruction of sacred mountain peaks and the alteration of tribal boundaries.
A federal judge previously ruled that construction could proceed within the 60-foot wide Roosevelt Reservation, a federal land buffer. However, tribal leaders contend that contractors must still cross tribal jurisdiction to access the site, violating tribal codes.
This project is part of a broader $46 billion federal initiative to secure the U.S.-Mexico border using 30-foot steel bollard walls, vehicle barriers, and advanced surveillance technology. In a separate development, the federal government has extended a construction pause in Big Bend National Park in Texas until mid-September following local opposition.
