CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford apologizes for tweet regarding Abdul El-Sayed

CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford has issued an apology after a social media post regarding Michigan senatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed was deemed a violation of network news standards.

Crawford had reshared a video from a town hall in Michigan where an attendee asked El-Sayed to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. In her deleted post, Crawford sided with the attendee, characterizing El-Sayed’s response as a “spectacular self-own.”

During the town hall, El-Sayed defended his position by citing religious freedoms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. He compared the scrutiny of his faith to the questions faced by President John F. Kennedy regarding his Catholicism, stating that he was running to be president, not to represent a specific religion.

Internal discussions at CBS News reportedly followed the incident, with some staff members expressing concerns that the post was akin to the network endorsing anti-Muslim sentiment.
