CBS News faces union criticism over layoffs and editorial interference

Writers Guild of America East president Tom Fontana wrote that CBS News leadership is engaged in a “near‑constant level of editorial interference” and has carried out “cruel and needless layoffs.” The union’s memo referenced the firing of veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, the closure of CBS News Radio, and the recent dismissals of correspondents Cecilia Vega, Sharyn Alfonsi and former executive producer Tanya Simon.

Fontana warned that the actions display contempt for journalism ethics such as honesty, integrity and objectivity, and pledged solidarity with CBS staff, stating “we see you, you are not alone” and that “thousands of your union brothers, sisters and siblings have your backs.” The criticism comes as CBS News operates under its new owner Paramount Skydance.
