CBS News London staff reprimanded over Gaza death toll dispute
CBS News staffers in London were reportedly reprimanded during an all-hands editorial meeting following disputes over the inclusion of Palestinian death tolls in coverage of the October 7 anniversary. Shayndi Raice, the bureau’s top editor, addressed the staff regarding editorial hierarchy and decisions made during a recent 'CBS Evening News' report.
Reports indicate a confrontation occurred between Raice and senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams. Williams had reportedly sought to include the Gaza war's death toll in a segment, but the context was removed from the final broadcast. Williams stated she was instructed to make changes to her report without the opportunity for negotiation.
Raice defended her editorial decisions, stating she had requested that the Israeli death toll also be included and that Palestinian casualties be distinguished between civilians and combatants to avoid making the segment too complicated. During the meeting, Raice reportedly told staffers, “This is not your publishing platform,” and warned that failing to follow the management hierarchy could be considered insubordination, which serves as legal grounds for firing.
