CBS News sued for $20 million over alleged false vandalism report

A 15-year-old Maryland teenager has filed a defamation and invasion of privacy lawsuit against CBS News, seeking at least $20 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleges that a June 21 report on the ‘CBS Evening News’ falsely linked the student to arrests involving the vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

The plaintiff, identified by the initials ‘JV’, claims he was actually detained the previous day while riding an e-dirt bike near the National Mall and was released without charges. While the original broadcast showed him from behind, the lawsuit alleges that edited versions distributed on social media showed his face, making him identifiable to friends and acquaintances.

The complaint states the footage reached approximately 1.8 million views across Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Although CBS later retracted the report, the teenager alleges the correction did not mitigate the emotional distress, humiliation, and potential long-term damage to his reputation and future opportunities.
