Romo was placed on indefinite leave following his July 23 arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Berson stated that the network is still assessing the situation, noting that the decision to sideline Romo was intended to protect the brand's image and keep the focus on the NFL season.

Romo, who is under a significant long-term contract, faces a court date on September 21. During his absence, CBS has elevated former NFL player J. J. Watt to serve as the top analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. Watt is expected to make his debut with the lead crew on September 13 for the Minnesota Vikings versus Green Bay Packers game. Ross Tucker has been moved up to the network's number two broadcast team.
