Cáceres celebrates 248 years of historical heritage
The city of Cáceres, located in the heart of the Pantanal region, celebrates a history spanning 248 years. Originally known as Vila Maria do Paraguai and São Luiz de Cáceres, the city was founded through the strategic vision of Captain-General Luiz de Albuquerque de Mello Pereira e Cáceres.
Key historical landmarks include the Praça Barão do Rio Branco, which houses the old Cais do Porto. This site holds aviation significance, as Italian pioneer Francesco de Pinedo landed a seaplane at Porto da Manga in 1927. The square also features the Catedral de São Luiz, a structure rebuilt with local timber, and the Marco do Jauru, a monument representing the 1750 Treaty of Madrid that defined borders between the Portuguese and Spanish empires.
