Cáceres: 10-year-old boy left at gas station and found 140 km away

A 10-year-old boy was accidentally left behind at a service station on the A-66 highway near Aldea del Cano, Cáceres, after his family resumed their journey without noticing his absence.

The incident occurred around 20:30 on a Sunday. Security footage showed the child exiting the vehicle during a stop, but his father, a friend, and his 7-year-old brother continued driving north without realizing he had not returned to the car.

Following an alert from service station staff, the Guardia Civil initiated a search operation. After traveling approximately 140 kilometers, the family's vehicle was intercepted by a patrol near Hervás around 23:00. The child, who had remained under the care of authorities at the service station, was safely reunited with his family.

The Guardia Civil has used the incident to issue a safety advisory, reminding motorists to visually verify that all passengers have returned to the vehicle before departing, noting that ‘a simple check can avoid a major scare.’
