Cáceres groups call for dialogue on urban renovation projects

In Cáceres, the organization Cáceres Verde, supported by nine other groups and various citizens, has issued an open letter to Mayor Rafael Mateos requesting a period of reflection and dialogue regarding planned urban reforms. The group is concerned that renovations to the Cánovas area and Virgen de la Montaña avenue could damage essential green spaces that serve as vital climate refuges for the city center.

The request comes as the City Council prepares to re-tender the Virgen de la Montaña project for 3.3 million euros following a previous contractor's withdrawal. Additionally, the municipality is planning interventions in the Cánovas and Plaza de América areas, supported by 6.5 million euros in European funding. Signatories argue that the current stage provides a window to redesign these projects to preserve the environmental, architectural, and cultural value of these urban corridors.
