Chile announces military modernization plan for Magallanes and Antarctica
Chile has announced an extensive military modernization program focused on the southern regions, including Magallanes and Antarctica. Defense Minister Fernando Barros stated that investment will nearly double compared to the previous year, with a planning horizon extending to 2043. Key projects include replacing the aging F-5 fighter jets, renewing C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and UH-1H helicopters, modernizing Leopard 1 tanks, and enhancing maritime surveillance and long-range aerial patrol capabilities.
Parallel to defense, the government is working to strengthen Magallanes as a strategic logistics and tourism hub for Antarctic access. This involves interministerial coordination to balance tourism growth with environmental protection and national sovereignty. Additionally, regional efforts are underway to improve connectivity, such as discussions to restore direct commercial flights between Chiloé and Magallanes.
In other regional developments, the government has established a Regional Economic Committee in La Araucanía to reduce administrative barriers and boost investment and employment. Meanwhile, in the O’Higgins region, authorities are coordinating to mitigate forest fire risks, and in Valparaíso, the PDI has been granted legal certainty for the use of the Curauma Technological Building.
