CCP seeks influence over Tibetan Buddhism via 17th Karmapa

A report by The Tibet Express claims that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is working to strengthen its influence over Tibetan Buddhism by maintaining close contact with the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. According to Khedrup Thondup, a nephew of the 14th Dalai Lama, the CCP’s United Front Work Department (UFWD) has been providing regular advice to the Karmapa and facilitating meetings with his parents in Hong Kong.

The report suggests that China aims to cultivate an influential ally within the Tibetan Buddhist community to tighten control over religious institutions and the Tibet region. This influence may extend to the Karmapa’s public statements, travel itineraries, and interactions with other religious leaders to ensure alignment with CCP political objectives and prevent support for Tibetan independence.

The report also references the International Campaign for Tibet’s (ICT) ongoing calls for the release of the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who has been in Chinese custody since 1995.
