CCPC reports surge in consumer complaints over faulty goods

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) reported that 22,724 consumers contacted its helpline during the first half of 2026. The primary issues reported were faulty goods, pricing, and contract performance. The most concerning sectors included vehicles and transport, utilities and fuel, and homebuilding and improvements.

Among the most frequently mentioned traders were Rathwood, Ryanair, Sky, Currys, and Harvey Norman. The CCPC also noted a 34% increase in inquiries related to online purchases. On average, consumers reported spending €6,473 on the products or services involved in their queries.

In a specific enforcement success, the CCPC secured the return of €250,000 in unspent gift card credit for JD Sports customers. While 91% of consumers took action following helpline calls, nearly 40% of issues were resolved, and almost half of those consumers had to contact retailers more than five times before reaching a resolution.
