CCSS announces intervention to reduce MRI waiting lists

The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) has announced a major intervention at the Centro Nacional de Imágenes Médicas (CNIM) to address extensive waiting lists for MRI scans. The institution aims to improve service management and clinical prioritization, particularly for oncology and urgent cases, to resolve a backlog of 12,470 pending studies.

This move follows an internal audit report revealing that 947 patients died while waiting for MRI reports as of March 31, 2026. While the audit noted these deaths could not be directly linked to reporting delays, the National Union of Nursing and Affiliates (Sinae) has filed a criminal complaint regarding alleged irregularities in contract execution and diagnostic service management.
