CCSS implants first in-house 3D-printed cranial prosthesis

The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) has successfully implanted the first cranial prosthesis designed and manufactured in-house using 3D printing technology. The procedure, performed at the Hospital San Juan de Dios, utilized medical imaging to create a customized device tailored to the specific anatomical needs of the patient undergoing cranioplasty.

The project is the result of a two-year development process involving staff training and an investment of approximately ₡115 million in specialized software, equipment, and infrastructure. This internal capability, led by the CCSS Logistics Management and the Orthotics and Prosthetics Laboratory, aims to enhance research and innovation within the institution.

Beyond the clinical benefits of personalized care, the initiative offers significant economic advantages. According to CCSS officials, the internally produced prosthesis resulted in a 64% cost saving compared to purchasing a similar device through external contracts.
