Cúcuta Security Secretary resigns after cyclist accident

Edwin Jhovanny Cardona Escobar, the Secretary of Citizen Security for Cúcuta, has resigned following a traffic accident on Sunday, September 27, that injured three cyclists on Demetrio Mendoza Avenue.

Witnesses and viral videos captured the incident, which involved a white Toyota Fortuner. Reports indicate that Cardona allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot through bushes to avoid police and potential sobriety tests. While Cardona issued a statement claiming his wife was driving the vehicle and that he was only assuming responsibility as the owner, local reports and journalists suggest he may have been the driver and was potentially under the influence of alcohol.

Cúcuta Mayor Jorge Acevedo accepted the resignation and expressed solidarity with the injured cyclists. Two of the victims remain hospitalized awaiting surgery for fractures, while one has been discharged. Authorities are currently investigating the technical evidence and the circumstances of the collision to determine legal responsibilities.
