CD Projekt Red scrapped The Witcher 3 NPC fear mechanic due to bug

CD Projekt Red developers revealed that an ambitious NPC fear mechanic was scrapped during the development of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt due to an unintended and morbid bug.

Quest designer Philipp Weber explained in an interview with Edge Magazine that the studio aimed to increase immersion by giving non-player characters (NPCs) authentic behaviors, such as dropping items and fleeing when sensing danger. However, the system could not distinguish between different types of held objects. This resulted in female NPCs dropping their babies on the ground while attempting to run away from the player character, Geralt.

After several weeks of testing, the developers realized the mechanic caused unintended chaos rather than realism. The team ultimately decided to abandon the fear system entirely to maintain a balance between complex world simulation and playable, logical character behavior.
