CD Projekt RED expands Fortnite collaboration and transitions to Unreal Engine 5

CD Projekt RED is expanding its collaboration with Epic Games' Fortnite, introducing content from the animated series ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’. According to industry insider Shiina, the upcoming cosmetic package is scheduled for release on Saturday, September 19. The set will include the character skin Lucy, a Rebecca backpack, an emote, a pickaxe, and the track ‘I Really Want to Stay At Your House’ by Rose Walton.

Separately, CD Projekt RED co-president Michał Nowakowski clarified the studio's decision to transition from its proprietary REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 for future projects, including the next Witcher title. Nowakowski stated that the move was not a reaction to the technical issues faced by Cyberpunk 2077, but was instead inspired by the technological capabilities demonstrated in the ‘The Matrix Awakens’ Unreal Engine 5 demo. The studio has entered a strategic partnership with Epic Games, allowing them to influence the engine's development to better suit their high-end graphical requirements.
