CD Projekt Red faces economic risks from massive scale, developer warns
Veteran game developer Mark Darrah has expressed concerns regarding the economic risks facing large-scale video game studios, specifically citing CD Projekt Red. In an interview, Darrah noted that many companies are attempting to emulate the massive scale and budgets of Rockstar Games' productions, such as the GTA series, which requires immense sales to avoid losses.
Darrah argued that the industry would benefit from more focus on mid-scale titles that can achieve success with sales of 3–4 million copies, rather than massive projects that risk financial failure if they do not reach tens of millions of units. He highlighted that large teams, such as the 519 developers currently working on The Witcher 4 at CD Projekt Red, face extreme costs where even a one-month delay can increase budgets by millions of dollars.
