CD Projekt Red's Witcher remake hits open‑world development hurdles

CD Projekt Red announced a remake of the original The Witcher in 2022, now being rebuilt with Fool’s Theory using Unreal Engine 5. Former lead story designer Artur Ganszyniec, who worked on the original game, explained that converting the linear title into an open world requires a complete overhaul of the game's foundation. New terrain must be populated, additional quests created, and the narrative must still fit the original story beats. Ganszyniec warned that the open‑world design could disrupt the game’s pacing and increase development time and costs, noting, “In The Witcher 1 many things worked because we knew exactly where the player would be at any time.” No launch date has been set, and the project’s delay is attributed to these extensive technical and design challenges.

The remake’s shift to an open world has sparked debate among fans and developers about whether the added freedom will enhance or dilute the original’s tight storytelling, with concerns that endless paths could strain budgets without guaranteeing a larger player base.
