CD sales surge as Generation Z adopts format for collecting
Compact Disc (CD) sales are experiencing a significant resurgence, driven largely by Generation Z and millennial consumers. Reports from Loop Rituals and Luminate indicate a substantial increase in the United States market during the first half of 2026. One report noted a 45.7% increase in units sold, totaling 17.5 million CDs, while another cited 16.3 million units sold, representing a 16% growth compared to the previous year.
This growth rate is outpacing the vinyl market. Interestingly, many younger consumers purchase CDs as collectible merchandise rather than for playback, with approximately half of buyers reportedly not owning a CD player. The K-pop phenomenon, particularly groups like BTS, is a primary driver of this trend, as fans purchase elaborate physical editions containing artbooks, stickers, and collectible photo cards.
Beyond collecting, the shift is also attributed to a desire for a tactile, uninterrupted listening experience. Consumers are seeking a way to disconnect from the constant notifications and algorithms associated with streaming services, favoring the physical ownership and perceived sound quality of the compact disc.
