CDC data shows decline in LGB identification among US high schoolers

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates a decline in lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identification among American high school students between 2023 and 2025.

Psychologist Jean Twenge, analyzing the findings, noted that the decline is most pronounced among younger students. Specifically, 9th graders reported an LGB identification rate of 11 percent in 2025, down from 17 percent in 2023. Twenge observed that the trend appears to be driven primarily by young women.

Gender-specific data shows that female LGB identification dropped from 27 percent in 2023 to 22 percent in 2025, while male identification fell from 9 percent to 7 percent. Among seniors, the identification rate was 16 percent, which remains two percentage points lower than the 2023 rate for that group. Twenge also suggested the shift extends beyond self-identification to include a decline in LGB sexual activity among sexually active younger teens.
