CDC Deputy Director Jennifer Shuford to resign in November

Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the deputy director and chief medical officer of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will depart the agency on November 12. Shuford, who was appointed by President Donald Trump in April and began her dual roles in June, is leaving after approximately five months in the position.

In a statement, Shuford expressed gratitude to President Trump and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., noting she is leaving to spend more time with her family. However, reports from The Washington Post and The Guardian suggest that disagreements regarding the administration’s vaccine policies may have also influenced her decision.

Dr. Satish Pillai will serve as the acting deputy director and chief medical officer while the agency seeks a permanent successor. Shuford previously served as the commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services and as Texas’ chief state epidemiologist.

Her departure occurs amid leadership turnover at the CDC and ongoing scrutiny regarding the agency’s handling of infectious disease outbreaks and vaccine recommendations.
