CDC Investigates Multistate Cyclospora Outbreak as Cases Rise in New York

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 145 domestically acquired cases of Cyclospora cayetanensis infection across 17 states, with illness onset dates ranging from May 1 to June 7, 2026. The median patient age is 43, 62% are female, and 20 cases have been hospitalized; no deaths have been reported. New York records the highest number of infections, estimating between 31 and 80 cases, while Michigan reports over 150 cases in seven counties and other states such as Texas and Illinois report up to 30 each.

All confirmed cases are linked to food consumption, and none involved recent international travel, indicating a domestic source. The specific food product has not yet been identified, preventing a targeted recall. The CDC notes that Cyclospora is difficult to trace because it contaminates produce at the farm or irrigation level, has a 1‑2‑week incubation period, and requires specialized laboratory testing not routinely performed.

Public health guidance advises thorough washing of fresh herbs and leafy greens, especially those imported from high‑risk regions, and seeking medical care for severe or prolonged diarrhea.
