CDC study reveals gaps in hospital infection response protocols

A study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has evaluated hospital readiness through unannounced simulations involving professional actors. Between January and June 2026, 69 healthcare facilities across New York, New Jersey, and the U.S. Virgin Islands participated in exercises designed to test the rapid recognition and isolation of high-impact infections.

In these simulations, actors presented symptoms consistent with avian influenza A(H5) to test whether staff could correctly identify the threat, implement masking, and initiate isolation protocols. The study found that masking and isolation were successfully implemented in only 60% of the cases, highlighting a gap between written protocols and real-world application during the critical initial minutes of patient triage.
