The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a health advisory warning of a nationwide increase in rabies exposures. Between July and August, rabies-related inquiries rose by 17% compared to the previous year.

Reports from at least eight state health departments indicated an increase in the administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) or errors in its administration. A significant mass exposure event occurred in North Carolina, where nearly 300 people were exposed to rabid baby goats from a mobile petting zoo. Following this event, health officials recommended PEP for 213 individuals.

Surveillance data also shows upward trends in animal rabies cases involving species such as raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. Health officials emphasize that while rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms manifest, it is preventable through timely medical intervention and the administration of PEP before the virus reaches the central nervous system.
