CDD-Ghana advocates for constitutional reform by 2027

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is calling for significant constitutional reforms ahead of Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary in 2027. Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, CDD-Ghana’s Director of Policy Engagement and Partnerships, suggested that updating the 1992 Constitution would serve as a fitting milestone for the nation.

Asante emphasized that the demand for reform is widespread, involving youth platforms and a coalition of over 100 civil society organizations known as the Citizens Platform for Constitutional Reform. He noted that the appetite for change spans various political lines and social sectors.

However, CDD-Ghana has also cautioned against rushing the amendment process. The organization urged the Constitution Review Implementation Committee to prioritize stakeholder consultation and consensus-building. Asante argued that the committee must create mechanisms for those who disagree with government proposals to present alternative positions, ensuring the resulting amendment bills possess broad legitimacy.
