Spanish coastal beaches face bathing bans due to bacterial contamination

Authorities in Spain have issued several warnings and prohibitions regarding bathing in coastal areas due to microbiological contamination. In the province of Cádiz, the Junta de Andalucía has banned bathing at five beaches across four municipalities: Aculadero-Puerto Sherry and Fuentebravía in El Puerto de Santa María, Micaela in Chipiona, La Cachucha in Puerto Real, and Punta Candor in Rota.

Routine analyses detected elevated levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci, posing potential health risks such as gastroenteritis. Local authorities are required to maintain signage and investigate the sources of the fecal bacteria. New water samples are being processed, with results expected to determine when restrictions can be lifted.

In Galicia, the Sergas has advised against bathing at O Portiño beach in Saians, Vigo, following similar detections of E. coli and enterococci. Meanwhile, in Tenerife, residents have long protested ongoing sewage discharge issues at the Cueva Negra submarine outfall. In Marín, Portocelo beach experienced a temporary advisory following heavy rainfall, though water quality has since returned to excellent levels.
