Cádiz bridge renamed amid political controversy

The Carranza bridge in Cádiz was stripped of its former name and given a new one linked to a figure from the Spanish Civil War, a change overseen by Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Parliamentarian Esther Gil of the Sumar party presented the renaming proposal to the government and described poet Rafael Alberti as a “gaditano universal”. Fellow deputy Teresa Rodríguez of Adelante Andalucía responded by equating the former mayor Carranza and Alberti as “señoros”. A separate suggestion to name the bridge after Mercedes Formica, a post‑war lawyer and writer from Cádiz who was a Falangist, was also mentioned. The debate has drawn sharp criticism, with a quoted remark from poet Miguel Hernández – “Aquí lo que hay es mucha puta y mucho hijo de puta” – cited in the discussion.
