Cádiz faces demographic shifts from aging population and tourism

The province of Cádiz is facing significant demographic shifts driven by an aging population and a booming tourism sector. In the capital city, more than one in four residents is over the age of 65, with some neighborhoods seeing elderly populations as high as 36%. This aging trend is compounded by a record low birth rate and social challenges, including loneliness and a lack of continuous healthcare for chronic conditions.

Factors contributing to these demographic changes include the rise of tourist accommodations. In 2025, the province recorded over one million overnight stays in tourist apartments, with Cádiz capital leading the province with more than 218,000 stays. The conversion of residential properties into tourist rentals has contributed to the displacement of long-term residents and increased housing costs, complicating the living situation for the elderly in older buildings.
