Cádiz reopens Teatro Pemán amid political controversy

The city of Cádiz is reopening the Teatro Pemán, its fourth public theater, following an 18-year hiatus. The venue is intended to serve as a summer cultural facility and expand the city's programming alongside other venues like Teatro Falla and Teatro de la Central Lechera.

However, the reopening has sparked political controversy. Izquierda Unida (IU) Cádiz has accused the municipal government, led by Bruno García, of violating the Democratic Memory Law by restoring the name 'Teatro José María Pemán'. IU claims the decision was made due to pressure from ultra-radical sectors. The political group further argued that the administration had previously referred to the venue as 'Teatro del Parque' in approximately 400 administrative documents during recent renovation works, contradicting claims that the name had never been formally changed.

Local officials, including Deputy Mayor of Culture Mayte González, emphasized that the renovated space features a flexible design with mobile seating to accommodate various event types. The theater is also expected to support local academic interests through a prior agreement with the University of Cádiz.
