Cádiz to test tsunami alert sirens on September 17

The city of Cádiz will conduct a technical test of its tsunami alert sirens on Thursday, September 17. The test involves three acoustic sirens located at the University of Cádiz (Centi building), the Junta de Andalucía building in Plaza de Asdrúbal, and the Nuevo Mirandilla Stadium. These devices were donated by UNESCO to support the city's prevention efforts.

Local authorities emphasize that this is strictly a technical sound test to verify functionality and does not constitute a real alert or an evacuation drill; citizens are advised not to take any action when the sirens sound. Following this test, the City Council intends to acquire additional sirens to ensure full coverage of the municipality.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) notes that tsunami risk in Spain is not uniform, identifying the southeastern Andalusian coast and the Gulf of Cádiz as high-risk areas due to proximity to tectonic structures in the eastern Atlantic.
