CDU Confirms Lead Candidates in Berlin and Wuppertal for Upcoming State Elections

Berlin's CDU re‑selected incumbent mayor Kai Wegner as its Spitzenkandidat for the September 2026 Abgeordnetenhaus election. Delegates voted in a secret ballot after a surprise candidacy was lodged by 85‑year‑old member Wolfram Wickert, resulting in Wegner receiving over 92 % of the vote.

In North Rhine‑Westphalia, the CDU in Wuppertal held its nomination meeting for the 2027 Landtag election. Mayor Rainer Spiecker will contest the Wuppertal I constituency against former police director Robert Gereci, while separate contests were held for the Wuppertal III and Wuppertal II districts involving candidates Ludger Kineke, Rafael Sarlak and others.
