Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election: CDU disputes TV debate format
A political dispute has escalated in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ahead of the state election regarding the format of televised debates. The CDU has sharply criticized the NDR, RTL, and ntv for moving away from a planned four-party debate to a head-to-head duel between Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and AfD candidate Leif-Erik Holm.
CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann accused the broadcasters of sacrificing journalistic independence to political maneuvering, suggesting a suspicion of political influence. CDU candidate Daniel Peters claims Schwesig made it clear she would only participate in a duel. This suspicion was fueled by a leaked chat message from an Ostseewelle director implying that broadcasters chose the duel format after Schwesig suggested it.
The SPD and NDR have denied these allegations. The NDR stated that the debate formats—a duel for the Minister President and a separate quad-debate for other parties—had been planned since April. SPD officials dismissed the claims of influence, arguing that the decision was based on established formats and polling data, which showed the AfD and SPD as the primary contenders.
