CDU demands sanctions against antisemitism at Hamburg universities

The CDU opposition in the Hamburg Bürgerschaft is calling for new legislation to combat antisemitism at universities following several incidents. CDU science expert Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein is advocating for a legally secure, tiered system of university regulations that would allow for various levels of disciplinary action.

Proposed sanctions include formal reprimands, exclusion from specific lectures or facilities, and, as a last resort, exmatriculation. For severe incidents, the CDU suggests that universities should have the power to immediately implement temporary campus bans, contact prohibitions, or exclusion from digital platforms. These measures would apply to students, professors, employees, external speakers, and university groups.

Additionally, the CDU proposal calls for a mandatory, uniform documentation and reporting standard across the state to ensure antisemitic incidents are systematically recorded and transparently evaluated. The opposition has criticized the current red-green Senate, including Science Senator Maryam Blumenthal, for being too hesitant in responding to these incidents.
