Germany: Chancellor Merz addresses youth protests and party internal strife
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing dual challenges following widespread youth demonstrations organized by the “Gen Z regelt” initiative. While the majority of the protests across more than 30 cities were peaceful, significant riots occurred in cities such as Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin. These incidents resulted in property damage, looting, and injuries to more than 100 police officers. Merz has vowed a zero-tolerance policy toward violence, stating that those who attack law enforcement or loot businesses “attack our freedom.” To address the underlying concerns of the younger generation, Merz announced that Federal Minister Karin Prien will serve as a youth representative to deepen dialogue.
Simultaneously, Merz is navigating intense internal pressure within the CDU. At a conference of district chairpersons in Berlin, representatives from eastern states, particularly Brandenburg, expressed deep dissatisfaction with federal policy, citing a lack of connection between the party leadership and its grassroots members. Some officials described the internal situation as a “dark red” alarm. Additionally, tensions persist regarding the party’s stance on the AfD, with some members debating whether to cooperate on specific legislative motions, a move Merz has rejected. Merz also warned that potential cooperation with the AfD could lead to former Chancellor Angela Merkel leaving the party.
