Ceagesp to open temporary facility for merchants after pavilion fire
Ceagesp is establishing a temporary operational structure for 124 merchants affected by a major fire that destroyed the MFE-A pavilion between September 5 and 6. The new temporary site, consisting of two large warehouse tents, is scheduled to open on October 16 and will be located one block away from the original site.
The temporary area will be approximately 4,800 square meters, a reduction from the previous 6,000 square meters. This centralized location aims to replace the current unsanitary conditions where workers are exposed to sun and rain in improvised canvas tents. The fire caused an estimated 50% drop in sales for the affected merchants.
To mitigate financial losses, Ceagesp administration has waived fees for the affected merchants until a permanent pavilion is delivered. The permanent replacement is expected to be completed by September 2027. The new design will feature modern improvements, including higher ceilings, mezzanines, refrigerated containers, and an elevated commercial area to prevent future flood damage.
