Ceará Electoral Court Schedules Hearing on Party Federation Conflict

The Tribunal Regional Eleitoral do Ceará (TRE-CE) has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, 30 July, to address a lawsuit filed by the state branches of União Brasil and the Progressistas. The parties seek to annul the convention of the Federação União Progressista that endorsed Ciro Gomes for governor of Ceará.

The federation’s convention, chaired by Capitão Wagner, backed Gomes and named former Fortaleza mayor Roberto Cláudio as vice‑candidate, while the two parties separately had supported the re‑election of incumbent governor Elmano de Freitas. The presiding judge gave the federation and the electoral public prosecutor one day to file responses and rejected a request for an immediate injunction, meaning the court’s decision will determine which candidate can access the federation’s party‑fund resources and campaign advertising time.
