Ceará Legislature Advances Agroecology Policy and Approves Multiple Bills
On 6 August 2026 the Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Ceará approved fifteen bills covering health, family agriculture, agroecology, culture, infrastructure and urban land regularisation. The measures include a new State Policy of Agroecology and Organic Production (PEAPO), reforms to the Institute of Health of State Servants (ISSEC) and its assistance fund, and changes to the committee that manages the family‑farm food‑acquisition programme.
Deputy Renato Roseno (PSOL) introduced an amendment to create pesticide‑free zones in the state. The proposal, linked to PEAPO, would ban the application, storage and aerial spraying of pesticides in areas such as certified organic farms, agrarian reform settlements, traditional community lands, water‑recharge zones, conservation units and buffers around schools, health centres and rural habitations. The amendment is slated for a vote in the coming days.
Deputy Moisés Braz (PT) reported that the PEAPO bill was read and began formal tramitation on 5 August 2026, moving to committee review. He thanked Governor Elmano de Freitas for supporting the initiative, describing it as a strategic step for sustainable rural development in Ceará.
