CEAZA unveils portable snow monitoring technology in Chile

The Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones (CEAZA) presented a new telemetry node system designed for monitoring snow in high-mountain environments at the Expo Montaña 2026 event in Santiago, Chile.

Organized by the Chilean Army, the exhibition brought together military forces, research centers, and technology developers. The new system aims to address the high costs and logistical difficulties associated with traditional, large-scale meteorological stations in glacial areas.

The developed technology is low-cost, easy to install, and can be transported by a single person. It measures essential variables such as snow height and temperature, facilitating increased monitoring points in hard-to-reach locations to better understand ice mass health, water resources, and climate change impacts. The project received support from the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID).
