Cedar Lá:lém affordable housing complex opens in Chilliwack
On July 30, 2026 the six‑storey Cedar Lá:lém building opened at the corner of Spadina Avenue and Main Street in downtown Chilliwack. The development provides 64 affordable rental units, including one‑ and two‑bedroom homes and five accessible units for low‑income individuals, families, Indigenous people and elders.
The project was created through a partnership among the Province of British Columbia, the City of Chilliwack, Cheam View United Church, Mabele’awt Qweesome Housing Society (MQHS) and the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA). Cheam View United Church contributed the former church site, valued at about $3 million, and retains ownership while leasing the land to MQHS for a 60‑year term at a nominal rate. Funding came from the provincial Community Housing Fund as part of a $19 billion BC housing investment. Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove said the city waived more than $1 million in fees to support the project. Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs Christine Boyle announced the opening, describing the development as a community‑centred effort to increase affordable housing supply and stability in the Fraser Valley.
