Cedimat medical director warns of declining childhood vaccination rates

Antonio Villega, medical director of Cedimat, has warned that misinformation and fear stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic have fueled anti-vaccine movements, leading to a significant decline in childhood immunization rates. Citing World Health Organization estimates, Villega noted that vaccination levels reached their lowest point in human history in the two years following the pandemic.

Projections suggest that by 2025, approximately 1.5 million children in Latin America may have incomplete or no vaccination schedules. This decline in coverage is linked to recent measles outbreaks in various countries, as low immunization rates facilitate the spread of the highly contagious disease.

In addition to public health concerns, Villega discussed the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in medicine. He noted that AI can optimize physician time, streamline electronic medical records, analyze health statistics, and support the research and development of new medications, though he cautioned that all technological innovations carry inherent risks.
